I've got merch again! Buttons! You can buy them at IndustrialPins.com, or you PDXers can buy them locally at Corrosion Records.

For those of you who aren't already in the know, I've got a track called "Anomalous" on the new Static Sky comp, ELECTRO/R/EVOLUTION. You can pick it up through Metropolis here. I recently finished contributing a vocal for a new SMP Track called "Metropolis", oddly enough. That will hopefully be turning up on the next Static Sky - SMP full length, don't rightly know at this point when that will be out. Also collaborating with my old bandmate and mentor, Larry Rainwater, on a PC track that I'm hoping to get into the next Interbreeding comp slated for this summer. If it doesn't turn up there, I'm tossing around the idea of putting out a CDEP this year that will come out on or around the same time as the DVD that will include it, along with some other tracks I've been working on, hoping to maybe get a few remixes in there as well. This is the first time in 17-some-odd years that we've worked together.

Last but not least, definitely check out the Penal Colony MySpace at www.myspace.com/penalcolony if you haven't already. I've cleaned it up, gave it a nice nifty new theme, linked the "Hypothalamus Now!" vid in there, there's a few blog entries, lots of nifty stuff.

08.09.2004

It's been awhile since my last post, so I've got lotsa cool new nuggets. The biggest reason for my lengthy time away is because I've been working on a new video for the DVD, which I've still got in post making some final touches. The good news is, I've got a cut of the entire video (!) available for pubic consumption. The video's for "Hypothalamus Now!", and you can see it at: www.thepenalcolony.com/hypothalamusnowvideo.htm. I've got QuickTime broadband and lowband versions, as well as broadband versions for realPlayer and Windows Media Player 9. You can also download them directly at: QuickTime Broadband Version, realPlayer Broadband Version, and WMP9 Broadband Version. still not enough for ya? well, there's more! I've got a collection of stills from the production of the video up as well! Those may be viewed at the Hypothalamus Now! Production Shots Page. I'm also hoping to get a few more outtakes added shortly. Keep holding your baited breath, y'all, I'll get this thing done yet!

In other, somewhat belated news; for those of you who've had their heads in the sand, SMP's hotly anticipated new CD, "Crimes of the Future", is out, and it kicks major_ass. In a major departure from the SMP of yore, Jason B. turns in a scorching version of the old Agent Orange O.C. hardcore anthem (and one of my all time favorite punk songs), "Bloodstains", as well as a balls-to-the-wall version of TSOL's (another seminal O.C. hardcore punk band) "I'm Tired of Life" from their proto-goth classic "Dance with Me" LP. Truly amazing stuff.

And I kinda wished I'd posted this sooner, but between working on the DVD and my failing health, I simply never seemed to get around to it - drummer extraordinaire Jason Bennett, late of a band called Professional Murder Music, as well as The Implicate Order, and some cEvin Key side projects - but MORE importantly, before he was all of those things - former member of Penal Colony circa "5 Man Job", is now the touring drummer for Skinny Puppy who are out making their rounds in support of their new record, "Greater Wrong of the Right"! How cool is that! I got a chance to hang out with him and the rest of the band when they came into town, and it was awesome. Best SP live show I've seen, and I've seen a few.

That's all for now. Keep hope alive, folks, the DVD is real close to being done.

Great gosh a'mighty... August of 2003 since my last post here... had no idea it's been that long. Been crazy busy working on the DVD content for the next rev of "Unfinished Business", tentatively titled "Unfinished Business: Special Edition". And that's just part of the good news. The rest is that I've got a music video done - well, really more of a short film - for the remix version of "Unfinished Business" (Unfinished Business (Strike Down Remix)). I also just finished a "web trailer" for the video, which can be seen at http://www.thepenalcolony.com/ubdvdpreview.htm. The setup for the video's concept is that it plays out like a sequel to the video the original band and I did for "Freemasons of Enochian Magick". it's a cut-to-8-years-later, what-are-the-protagonists-doing-now kind of thing. So check out the trailer, and if you've never seen it before, check out the "Freemasons" video on rollingstone.com to get the full effect. But wait! There's more! I've got some outtakes from the "Unfinished Business" video that I will be posting shortly to it's own page that will be launchable from the "Media" section of the site. Keep Your eyes peeled for that, I will also plug an annoucement here once I've got all of that stuff in place. I've also got an update on the previously mentioned appearance I made on an yet-to-be-released SMP track. The track is slated to be included on SMP's self-produced forthcoming long player, "Crimes of the Future". Be on the lookout for that one soon. Recently, Jason returned the favor and made an appearance on yet-to-be-released PC track, titled "Omega". That track should be turning up on the next CYBOnetix comp Tommy at DSBP is planning on putting out. On a final note, I've had a few of you out there give me a little much deserved grief about not having some of the empty areas of the site completed. All I've got to say is, Hey, perfection takes time! Seriously, I've known what I wanted to do with those areas for some time, and hopefully I can find a window of opportunity sometime soon, during some lull while editing the all of the video for the DVD. Don't hold your breath though... :-P - D

For those of you who weren't aware, Unfinished Business is out (actually, it dropped 05.23 - sorry, been kinda busy with other things - more on that below) and on sale online at DSBP and Amazon, as well as your favorite local rekid store that carries Metro stuff, since it gets distro'ed through Metropolis Records. Skeptics, skept not on this; I for one have been to the Ozone Records UK around the corner from my day gig in downtown Portland, and there it was, prominently displayed in the "New Releases" section at the back of the shop. No more excuses! Git it while the gittin's good!

As always, lotsa plates spinning over here at PCP central. I did some remixes of the track "Ghost" for my old pal Chad and his band Idiot Stare, which just came out a couple days ago on the "Ghost" remixes CD. It includes remixes by the likes of Christ Analogue, SMP, Doll Factory, and more. It also includes a cover of the old Afrika Bambaata/Johnny Rotten track "World Destruction, and QT/5.1 Surround AVI versions of the "Ghost" video. This is a new cut, not the one that can be seen on their site. Very_cool stuff.

The SMP appearance I alluded to in my last news entry is in the can, and will be released on the next SMP record, which will drop just as soon as Mr. Bazinet finds a home for it. The track's called "Soylent Green", and it rocks tha muthaf**kin bells, yo. Keep an eye out for it.

Last but not least, still plugging away at the content for the forthcoming CD/DVD release of UB. The interview and track making of/commentaries have all been shot, we are now in pre-production for the Unfinished Business video. Stay tuned for outtakes of the material to be included!

P.S., Sam Phillips R.I.P.

Great gosh o' mighty... Been awhile since I've talked to y'all, I know. Spent at least half the time since my last post fighting a raging sinus infection that visited my head caves twice in the course of about a month. Wasn't much fun, I must say.

Been working feverishly on the "making of unfinished business", and it is finally done. I thought I was going to chunk out a couple of paragraphs about it, but the thing ended up turning into a doggone tome. I spent some time talking about the history of computer music composition, and how it fit into the making of the record. That got more involved that I had anticipated. If you're any fraction of the tech geek I am, I think you'll enjoy it.

Update on the Industrial Nation writeup - Looks like the piece on Penal Colony planned for the spring issue ain't gonna happen. The good news is, Mr. Speck has written a review of the record, and it's looking like there is about a 95% percent chance it's going to be turning up in the Summer issue of IN, along with reviews of some other DSBP stuff, so once again, keep your eyes peeled for it.

The "making of unfinished business" is probably going to be the last new section you'll be seeing for some time. Jason from SMP spoke to me awhile back about dropping some rhymes for a track he's working on for the next SMP record that will tentatively include appearances by me and several other NW quadrant Industrial/Hip-Hop artists. Should be very, very cool. Hopefully I'm not too late to submit my part for it, but I'll be working on that soon. My old homie Chad from Idiot Stare, whom I've known since his days in Screaming To God (STG), has asked me to do a remix of the Idiot Stare track, "Ghost", for some sort of remix ECD they're working on, slated for release sometime in the summer.

So I've got that stuff to work on, as well as, of course, the DVD I'm working on for the Limited Edition UB release. I spent a great deal of my time, over the past month or so, pulling together all of the tools and hardware I'm going to need for the post work and DVD authoring. On that front, the updates I do plan on doing to the site on the short term will be the periodic addition of clips from shootings of the various segments for the DVD. I think we're looking to shoot the interview segment first, so keep checking the media section of the site for clips from that, as well as clips of outtakes for all of the other segments we have planned.

Thanks to our Troops fighting in the Middle East, and to their families. Come home soon.

Media section has been added. More visible links may be found to the free MP3's on this page, no excuse not to check them out now.

Just finished doing an interview with the fine Mr. Ryan Speck, writer/critic for Industrial Nation (like me, it's back and badder than ever! :P ). He's doing a piece about me/the band and the record that should be turning up in the Spring issue. Keep your eyes peeled for it!!! Ryan is quite the insightful, funny-in-a-very-black-way writer. Some of the stuff in his Live Journal is very funny, often brutally honest. Pop in and check his noise out.

01.29.2003

It's official... Penal Colony has inked a deal with DSBP Records to release "Unfinished Business"!!! The record is scheduled to be released in May, a special Limited Edition CD/DVD release is slated to roll out around the same time or shortly thereafter. Stay turned...

01.26.2003

BIG announcement coming soon about the new record... Very soon. Keep checking the site for updates.

01.20.2003

Lyrix section is up, finally... This version is strictly lyrics from the new record; at some point, time willing, I plan to have everything up. I checked out Public Enemy's site when I was in the process of figuring out what the heck I was going to include in mine, and I really dug that they had obviously gone through some trouble to get all of theirs up from all of their records, and made it one of the focal points of the site. Theirs is what I aspire to. Long live Chuck D.

Tommy T of CyberAge, DSBP, and Diverje fame got his advance copy of the remixes, and spun the remix for "Unfinished Business" on his 1.5.2003 CyberAge radio show. Check it out. Also, check out the new show, check out the new DSBP releases, and buy a couple CD's off the brother, if you like what you hear.

Five thousand.

Getting a little closer to a full blown HTML version of the site. Home page is in place, and the Bio, Discography, and contact sections are complete. Keep coming back to check out the new sections as they are added!

I don't know about you all, but I was real torn up over Joe Strummer's passing. I taught myself how to play drums when I was about 17. I did so by taking a handful of records, and playing them over and over until I learned the drum parts. Among those records was "Black Market Clash" and the first Clash record, which was among the first punk rock records I ever heard. Joe made it okay to be socially concious and punk without it coming off as bad neo-hippie posturing, and did so at a time when mixing the two was frowned upon by most of his contemporaries. His work served as the blueprint for the millions of punk and post-punk bands that followed. Dave Allen, the original bass player of Gang of Four (one of my favoritest bands of all time), who lives up in my neck of the woods now and works for Intel, eulogized Joe Strummer in a local rag here recently, and said flatly, without Joe Strummer, Gang of Four couldn't have existed.

Joe Strummer's work, in no small part, served as my entry point into Reggae and Dub. I had heard Bob Marley prior to hearing the Clash's reggae stuff, but I never really listened to reggae until I heard the Clash do it. He showed everyone the symbiotic relationship between punk and reggae, he made it clear that one couldn't have existed without the other. While it could be argued, stuff like "Armegeddon Time" and the band's covers of "Police and Thieves" and "Pressure Drop" laid the groundwork for the resurgence of Ska later on. Heck, from where I sit, that stuff influenced much of the goth some of you may listen to. Don't believe me? Play Joe Stummer's "Revolution Rock" or "Robber Dub" (used to be called "Bankrobber (Robber Dub)) with the Clash or damn near anything by Lee Perry back to back with "Bela Lugosi's Dead" and "She's in Parties", and listen to the drum and bass parts...

He was way too young to die. All of my heroes are dropping like flies. At least the Adolescents are all still alive...

R.I.P. Joe Strummer.

Welcome to the site. Sad as it may or may not seem, this is the first official Penal Colony site ever created. The closest thing we ever had to a site prior to this was an unofficial one that was built and maintained by a fan, who was a student at U of Mich if memory serves me.

I am in the process of working on the first iteration of the site, which, in terms of content, will be comprised mostly of your basic, garden variety content. The final version will be quite a bit more ambitious; and as such, is going to take quite a bit more time to do. So in true XP/Agile programming fashion, I'm getting a basic site up now, move on to finish work on the planned multimedia companion that will accompany the new record, "Unfinished Business",then come back to the site, and build a much more comprehensive version of it.

As we (meaning myself and Angelus, the PC Minister of Disinformation/Media Assassin) shoot and complete more and more content for the multimedia companion, we're planning on posting bits and pieces to the site, so you will have that to look forward to.

I have made the free 128k MP3's of selected tracks off of the record that I announced previously on RMI and a few other groups available on the site now as both streams and downloadable MP3's. The streams are at:

That's about all I can think of to report at this point. Well, one other thing - I've been working on the static version of the site, and I gotta say that Dreamweaver MX absolutely, positively, rocks. It is so stupid easy to do stuff with DHTML and layers and work with other Studio MX apps that it just seems too good to be true.

I_did_not want to do an HTML version of the site, My original plan was to just do the whole thing in Flash, all versions, top to bottom, no HTML version. Fought Angelus tooth and nail on that one and ultimately lost that battle, so I will be maintaining Flash version, and an HTML version for the 15% (actual figure from "Actionscripting in Flash MX" by Phillip Kerman) of you antique jackholes out there that, for whatever reason, either don't like Flash sites or are too lazy to upgrade to Flash 5 or 6.

The hardest hurdle for me to get over with doing a static site was creating a News reader object. I didn't want to do it with frames; I wanted something that I could freely move around the page, like an ActiveX control in a standalone VB/.NET app, without any frame constraint. Dreamweaver MX and DHTML allowed me to do that, so progress with the site is moving along much faster now.

R.I.P. William Burroughs and Charles Bukowski.

Peace and good will to the rest of you.
